Dealing with Fear

Fear is something we deal with almost daily. Fear of making a mistake, fear of failing a test, or just fear of failure. The list goes on and on. In a world that feels increasingly unstable, fear isn't just an emotion - it's a tactical variable.

When disaster strikes the fear factor is off of the charts. There are fears  about our family’s safety and of those we care about. Fear of the potential dangers.

Fear is a fact of life – but you don’t have to let it control your life. Socrates said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy – not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” How we interact with change sets the stage for our quality of life.

What is fear?

Merriam-Webster dictionary (online) defines fear as:

·         “To be afraid and worried”

I define fear as “an event or something that has the potential to cause one to react irrationally or be “misguided”. Why do I say that? Because, fear is one thing that can cause us to do irrational things; even dangerous things. Fear can be an awareness or an anticipation. Some fears are imagined. Fear can be temporary or permanent. Depending on the fear and how intense it is.

What are some things we might be afraid of? Just contemplate them, no need to write them down.

Here is a list of some of the fears I came up with:

                Fear of death/dying

                Fear of being trapped

                Fear of rejection

                Fear of the dark

                Fear of heights

                Fear of change

How can we “Deal” with Fear?

Fear can have a positive effect, or a negative effect. Fear can give us strength to do “impossible” feats. Fear can cause us to do nothing at all. Fear can cause us to do thing we wouldn’t normally do. This includes things that could be hazardous to us, our families, or our loved ones.

My intent is to bring an awareness to you and help empower you to handle whatever challenges (fears) you may encounter.

How can you prepare for fear?

The first thing you need to do is identify what your fear is. When you are working through your fears be specific. An example, “I’m afraid of storms” is not specific enough. What kinds of storms? What is it about that particular storm that scares you?  Once you understand what is causing the fear you can talk to someone to help with that issue.

Dealing with the Fear

What are you saying to yourself that causes your fear? If you understand what you are saying (silently maybe) to yourself, you can consciously stop saying those things and start being more positive.

Exaggerate the “bad things” you are afraid of.

Think of the worst possible thing that could happen. Have “fun” trying to devise the worst possible things that could happen. Usually you will find that most of the things you “image” are impossible. This is why we built the "Worst Case" scenarios into the Sovereign Doctrine -in Chaos Reigns: Return to Life - so you can face them in your mind before you ever have to face them int the street.

Imagine it in a positive way.

Relax, take a deep breath. Mentally work through what you are afraid of. Continue to work through these mental exercises.

Actually do/approach what you are afraid of

Meet the fear head on. Maintain positive talk (to yourself).

[Warning: Do not attempt to do something that is dangerous. For example, if you are afraid of heights don’t attempt standing and a tall object a lone. Take a friend, loved one, or family member with you.]

Preparing for fear requires a blueprint. Watch the trailer below to see how we've mapped out the path from panic to planning.

Keep in mind: A little fear is okay…in fact it can be a good thing. Fear that paralyzes you…is not. Fear hardly ever “goes away”, but you can work through your fear and do what you have to do in order to survive.

Wrap Up

To overcome your fear, first determine what your exact fear is.

Use positive reinforcement to help you through.

Consult your "Core" or you trusted circle to help you through.

You don’t have to face your fear alone-others want to help you.

Prayer/Meditation can help you cope with your fear.

Regarding fears associated with disasters having an Emergency Readiness Plan will help quiet your fears.

Above all:

Stay Positive

Pray/Meditate

We each have the ability to influence our well-being, and the well-being of those around us. Being positive not only makes us feel better, but it allows us to help those around us be more positive as well.

Fear is not something we can ever truly escape, but it is something we can ensure does not control our lives or our actions, if we chose to not allow it to control us.

Final Thought

The Sovereign Survival Rule: We may not be able to eliminate all of our fear(s), - but – if we prepare ourselves Spiritually, Mentally, as well as Physically, we can handle anything.

Stay Ready. Remain Calm.
