During my deployment, I was tasked with analyzing a route for a U.S. Marine unit heading to Baghdad. The planned path via Highway 6 was a tactical disaster—an elevated two-lane road flanked by enemy divisions. Despite warnings, the leadership remained fixated on this corridor of death until I presented a hard truth: following the obvious map was a trap.\n\nI proposed an unconventional alternative using unfinished Highway 1. While it offered the element of surprise, it lacked bridges. Drawing on my Combat Heavy Engineer expertise, I suggested using specialized piping to create rapid, secure crossings. This creative solution provided a safer, faster route that circumvented the entrenched threats waiting on the main road.\n\nThe leadership chose to listen and abandoned their initial plan for my proposed path, arriving safely in Baghdad. Had they remained stubborn, a whole brigade might have been lost. This experience underscores a vital lesson: while determination is a strength, fixation is a danger.\n\nTrue leadership requires the humility to reevaluate your stance when the stakes are high. Being open to new perspectives isn't just about flexibility; it is about survival. Stepping back to assess the truth before the cost becomes too high can save everything.
