Why do I need a written Emergency Readiness Plan (ERP) if I already know what to do?

Because if the "plan" only exists in your head, it isn't a Plan—it is just an Idea.In a crisis, ideas fail. They fail when you are under extreme stress, they fail when you are injured, and they fail the moment you aren't there to explain them. We differentiate between "Prepared" and being "Ready". Being prepared eludes to the fact that you will eventually reach a point of having having thing you would "need" for a particular event.  Being ready means having the skills and the mental fortitude to survive an event no matter how few or many supplies you may have.A question that needs to be asked and answered: In the event that you have to abandon all of your supplies (fire, flood, etc.) can you still survive? If you are "Ready" then you will survive an event. Being "Prepared" is about Assets. It’s the act of buying gear and stockpiling supplies. It is a state of "having." If you have a mountain of gear but no SOP for how to use it when the grid fails, you are merely "Prepared" for a disaster you cannot manage. Being "Ready" is about Execution. It is the state of having a fully developed Emergency Readiness Plan. Readiness is the Science of Intelligence applied to your specific environment. It means you have already established your PACE plans, your Infrastructure Baseline, and your Perimeter Protocols in a written, actionable format. The Bottom Line: You can buy "Preparation" at a store. You must build "Readiness" through a plan. Preparation is what you own; the Emergency Readiness Plan is how you win.

In The Watchman Doctrine, we define the difference through the lens of Legacy vs. Hobby. The Prepper focuses on Acquisition. Prepping is often an individual pursuit centered on "having stuff." It is an inventory-based, fear-based mindset. The danger here is the "Single Point of Failure"—when all the gear and all the knowledge stays trapped in one person’s head. If the "prepper" isn't home when the crisis hits, the family is left vulnerable despite the mountain of gear in the garage or wherever it is stored. The Watchman focuses on Stewardship. A Watchman views themselves as an “Intelligence Officer” for their family and community. The goal isn't just to "have," but to distribute readiness. A Watchman understands that they may not be the one opening the bin or starting the generator when the world goes non-linear. The Watchman Standard in Action: A Prepper owns a supplies and a generator. A Watchman ensures there is a written SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) so that his spouse or children, or those they care about know exactly how to start that generator, manage the fuel, manage the supplies, and maintain a Core of Calm® even if he isn't there to lead them. The Bottom Line: Prepping as a collection of gear is a liability; the Watchman Mindset is a Legacy of Security.
